Lake Megami, at an altitude of 1,500 meters, high in the Tateshina region of Nagano Prefecture, is frozen from December to March every year. Annually, since 1995, from mid-January to the end of February, we have held lessons to teach safe winter driving techniques on its frozen surface.
Focusing on braking and cornering techniques, the curriculum gives students the chance to drive through slaloms and around a circuit course, and to push their cars safely beyond their mechanical limits, yet in a safe environment. The course includes interesting themes such as the effect of anti-lock braking systems (ABS), traction control and other car safety systems, and considers the impact of studless tires and car-controll systems on the handling characteristics of vehicles.
During the program, participants also have the opportunity to practice on the course by themselves.
